Yoichi 20 Year old, 52%

sample from a friend

Nose: Faint, not the most pungent here. All the same, there is beautiful integration. Pear, quiet apple and lemon, graphite. Oil (putty, I like this). Ginger. Stones and something almost coastal, but not fully. Sandalwood in the far rear, with just the slightest of spice and salt. (with water) Amps up the aromas. Moving here to caster sugar, sweet spice, soft and sweet wood. Candied walnuts and even a sweet smoke.

Palate: Yes, silky. The oak is so perfectly integrated. It shows up, and it's always in check and extremely balanced. Honey and honeyed. Graphite, light ash, and then some rancio. A little more sour fruit. (with water) A little more candied here as well, more rancio and walnuts, and delicious. Rather linear. Swims well, loses just a hair.

Finish: Some residual sweetness along with the graphite, lemon, and smoke - all subtle and dessert-like. This is really lovely and graceful, just a bit more subdued and linear than I'd have expected. Still, extremely well made, extremely enjoyable, and excellent

Thank you! I had to take a few months away from it due to acid reflux, and posting would have just been too much temptation, so I steered clear for a while.

Things seem to be back in order. I wanted to take some time to do my tasting notes and have a few in hand before posting again. Took some time, my pace will be slower, but it's nice :)

I am in the middle of triathlon training season, so I am also drinking way less than usual. Last year, I was taken out early with a broken collar bone and so had plenty of time to heal and sip. My serving sized are also much smaller than ever. I guess the bright side would be my bottles last longer.

Nice to have you back numen !! Hope it's going to be all right from now on, I was missing your reviews ;) All these "higher than 50% abv" japanese whiskies seem to be pretty tasty but I'm afraid to look up the prices... I quite liked the 10 yo standard yoichi, really looking forward to try the 15 yo.

@BSinTX, I also seem to have missed the transition from KY to TX! The broken collar bone sounds terrible, but the triathlon sounds intense and pretty incredible. I remember reading the stories and seeing the photos of you and your bike!

@Pierre, thanks! It's nice to be back a bit. I'll probably be slower with tasting notes in general - I'm more in consolidation of my collection than anything else. The Yoichi were really delightful, but I'm also afraid to know how much they cost. I saw that the 20 year Yoichi is over $300. I can't imagine what the single cask releases cost, especially because they're just from the distillery (in Japan!)

Yeah, my days of traveling the US and dealing with snow are in my past. I moved to Austin this past April.

I agree with the high ABV.....I may have to go hunting for some Japanese whiskey. When I lived in Japan from 1994-1998, about the only thing I had access to was Suntory which was so bad that I would just drink Crown Royal instead.

Wow, hard to beleive about Suntory... Well, the Hibiki 12 is really bland in my taste and the 17 is expensive for what it is, but I appreciate the Yamazaki line. I agree that NIkka is better overall. And I would so much love to work in Japan for a few years (sorry, I repeat myself but I really miss that country :mrgreen: ) !
Seems Ichiro is nice stuff too but the prices are prohibitive...
