Blanton's Silver Edition (49%)

Postby Pierre » Wed Apr 02, 2014 6:20 pm

This is a special offering of Blanton's, and is now discontinued as far as I know. I managed to get a bottle at a "reasonnable" price on ebay (50 euros), and since I'm not the collector type... Well I opened it of course ! And it was like:

Nose: a little high pitched, quite minty and mineral, clearly more than other Blanton's I tried. Over time appear some yellow flowers, jasmin and a cheesy quality, a little like Booker's. With even more time you get apricots and yellow fruits in general.
Palate: here comes some wood (oak) with light caramel and it's less spicy than Blanton's usually is...
Finish: it's a bit bitter and sweet at the same time, with a medicinal quality that I didn't find very often in bourbon I must say.

All in all it's a particular Blanton's, not quite the usual stuff, and not that particular for a bourbon either given my (limited) experience. It's not bad, the alcohol is well mastered and is never aggressive given the abv content. It's a nice drink, but at 50 euros it's already a bit overpriced I'd say (I can have Eagle Rare at a smaller price and it's quite good imo... And Noah's Mill for a few more euros and it's definitely better on my scale !). Given that specialised websites and liquor stores will probably not sell you this under 100 euros, I'd say it's just not worth the price, except if you're a collector, of course... For me, Blanton's Straight from the Barrel still rules. Now I need to try out the Gold Edition !

Great to hear about this version. For the past 6 months or so, you couldn't find any Blantons on any shelves as the distillery just could not keep up with the sales. The same for Eagle Rare and Elmer T. Lee (all Buffalo Trace Distillery products.) I will keep an eye out for the Gold and Silver. Typically I would buy two bottles; one to drink and one to keep as the value of these products are increasing enough to call them investments.

The basic Blanton's and Eagle Rare are pretty good value for the money, nice to see that good products are so successful 8-)
For the collector's value of Silver Edition I do believe you're right since it's discontinued, while the Gold is not... I'm really curious about the gold but I think my next Blanton's bottle will be a Straight from the Bottle
