Re: Any Love for Armagnac??

BSinKY, Thanks for the notes on the Rieston! I figure that I'll just chat about the Armagnacs here. :D Darroze really does a great job picking out barrels, but sometimes he gets to them a little late and they are over-oaked. I think that the woodiness, dryness, and strength in armagnacs really vary ...

Re: What is the first cognac I should buy?

BSinKY, which Arturo Fuente is that? I've had a few good ones from them before. I think that my all-time favorite stick (easily obtainable), though, was the 1964 Padron Anniversario Maduro. I've had the fortune to have a few Cohibas, and the Siglo II blew me away - and works very well with a drier c...

Re: Greetings from the US

Thanks, BSinKY! I think that you're probably right about the lack of real choice in a standard liquor store. Consumers new to cognac are probably also confused about the difference between VS, VSOP, and XO, not to mention the other expressions, of most producers -- and that's if the store even carri...

Re: Your last Cognac purchase?

BSinKY - Happy Birthday!

I'd also love to get your tasting notes on that sucker. I've heard very good things about Rieston, and 26 years in barrel sounds like it's in the sweet spot.

Cheers,

Re: Greetings from the US

Thanks! I've done a few reviews/tasting notes of Cognac (as well as Armagnac and whiskies) on cellartracker under the same name. Of course, there were more that I never got around to noting or reviewing, but I sure plan to try many, many more! I'm really grateful for this forum; I've been surprised ...

Greetings from the US

Hello! I'm from the US and love all the brown spirits, but I've found that it's rather challenging to find lots of people with whom to discuss Cognac (and heaven forfend one should wish to chat about Armagnac). I've been fortunate enough to have a lot of different Cognac by lots of different produce...

Re: Any Love for Armagnac??

I love some Armagnacs! I've had some very good from Francis Darroze and Chateau Laubade, in particular. My preference tends to be around the 25-35 year mark for the vintage stuff. The 40+ year old bottles that I've had seem to have taken on way too much wood! The 15-20 year old stuff can be good, bu...

Re: Your last Cognac purchase?

My most recent was a spare bottle of Daniel Bouju's Reserve Familiale. Now I won't feel so guilty about opening the bottle I've got!

Re: 40% ABV or 80 proof spirits

Hi BSinKY, You raise a very interesting point, and I find that I am somewhat in agreement on the low ABV amount in Cognac. The higher proof in higher end bourbons, notably the cask strength, seems to me to be part of the trend from the high end Scotch whiskies that are bottled at cask strength. For ...
